Demonstrating Adult Stem Cell Successes

Adult stem cell successes: For decades, developing new drugs has been the dominant force in new medical treatments. This pharmaceutical paradigm has evolved into a multi-billion dollar industry.

Paradoxically, most doctors don't have a problem prescribing toxic chemotherapy or other drugs with a significant incidence of serious side effects, because "we know what the risks are." However, they are reluctant to consider other potentially beneficial alternative or natural options because of fear of doing harm. Somehow, identified poisons are less fearsome than unknowns, even if the unknowns have been commonly and widely used in other applications.

More recently, gene therapy has shown promise; however, several prominent disasters with this treatment have brought to light the potential dangers.

Now, stem cell research is at the forefront of advances in medicine in this century. Both embryonic and adult stem cells have been investigated as potential therapeutic agents. To date, all stem cell treatments that have shown real benefit have been derived from adult stem cells.

Medical conditions for which adult stem cell treatment has shown promise

In contrast to embryonic stem cells, which are much in the news and popular in the laboratory studies, successful applications of adult stem cells have been clearly documented. Some of the categories of conditions for which adult stem cells have shown benefit are listed here:

Cancer (many, including:)
Lymphoma
Leukemia

Neurological conditions
Parkinson's disease
Stroke
Spinal cord injury

Auto-immune disorders (many, including:)
Multiple sclerosis
Type I diabetes
Rheumatoid arthritis
Crohn's disease
Systemic vasculitis
Systemic lupus erythematosus

Cardiovascular diseases
Myocardial infarction (heart attack)
Coronary artery disease

Anemias (many types)

Immunodeficiencies

Metabolic conditions and liver damage

Wound repair and burn healing
